Purathasi prayer for 2024

Purattasi is the name of a month in Tamil calender that falls after Aavani. This year it is from 17th September to 17th October. Purattasi masam is the month in which full moon normally occurs either on Poorattadhi/Uttirattadhi stars. More auspiciously this year First Puratasi starts on pournami day. In Sanskrit it is Poorva Proshthapada – Uttara Proshthapada. From this Sanskrit Proshthapada word, Purattasi has evolved. Purattasi is an important Tamil month like Aadi, while Aadi month is for Amman Puratasi is for Perumal. According to Legend Lord Venkateswara appeared on earth in Purattasi Masam and also there is a myth that Lord Sani losses his power in this month.

Saturdays of Purattasi or Purattasi Sani  dedicated to Lord Venkateswara and Lord Saneeshwara in the Navagrahas. While it is generally given a negative image, Saneeshwara is also the Giver of Boons. He is given the label Ishwarar by Lord Shiva, making Him Saneeshvara Bhagavan. Those who are unable to fast on usual Saturdays, observe vratham on Purattaasi Sani days.  Pujas are offered to Lord Sani to please him. Some people observe partial fasting on all days in Puratassi others limit it to Puratasi Saturdays. Nirjala Vratam is extreme vrata or Puratasi Saturdays fasting by not even drinking a drop of water. Otherwise, onion, garlic and meat is avoided.
 
Some devotees do not include onion, garlic and meat in their meal throughout this month.  Some have the ritual of doing Mavilaku Mavu poojai for Lord Venkateshwara on 1st, 3rd or 5th Saturday. The Tamil community, irrespective of their sects, offer Maavilakku to their Ishta Devatas in temples or homes just as they offer them on the 1st Aadi and 1st Thai Fridays or Vellikizhamai. Purattasi month is an auspicious month. Lighting ghee lights will brings luck and prosperity.
