Things to do on Maha Shivratri for better blessing

  1. Wake up early during Brahma Muhuratham
  2. Do Dhyanam or meditation. It followed by Sankalpam
  3. Take a bath and fresh yourself. Wear clean white clothes.
  4. Maintain celibacy (Prevent
  5. Observe viratham or fasting.
  6. Chant OM Namah Shivaya as many times as possible
  7. Perform Abhishekam by offering water or raw milk (or ghee, curd and honey) to the Shiva Linga at temple.
  8. Offer Datura flowers and fruits, white crown flowers and Vilva (Bel Patra).
  9. Offer Chandan instead of turmeric.
  10. Offer your prayers and perform the puja during Nishita Kaal or all four prahars. Check out the timings here.
  11. Consume fruits, milk and recipes with vrat-compliant ingredients.

Dont do this on Maha Shivratri

  1. Consumption of wheat, rice and pulses in any form is strictly prohibited. Avoid spices and oily foods.
  2. Do not consume meat, onion and garlic. 
  3. Do not consume tobacco or alcohol.
  4. Do not offer coconut water to Shiva Linga.
  5. Do not offer vermillion (sindoor/kumkum) to the Shiva Linga.
  6. Avoid offering Ketaki flowers.
  7. Avoid steel containers for puja. Use Brass, copper or silver instead.
  8. Avoid black-coloured clothes.
  9. Do not offer Tulsi leaves to Lord Shiva.
  10. Do not do a full parikrama of the Shiva Linga.
